The Fresh Carpet Hid a Death, but the HOA Had Buried Something Worse

Chapter 1: The Stain Beneath the Welcome Mat

The stain appeared when Margaret Taylor dragged the last moving box across the living-room carpet.

At first she thought the cardboard had leaked. The bottom of the box was damp from the morning grass, and a dark crescent had spread beneath one corner. She lifted it quickly, expecting wet fibers.

Instead, the stain remained.

It was no larger than her palm, reddish-brown beneath the beige pile, and too sharply defined to be ordinary moisture. Margaret pressed two fingers against it. The carpet was dry.

Behind her, Brian Scott stopped explaining how the afternoon light made the room feel larger.

“That wasn’t there during the walk-through,” he said.

Margaret looked up at him. Brian still held the key ring between two fingers. His smile had not vanished, but it had tightened at the corners.

“The carpet is new.”
