The Food Truck She Tried to Remove Became the Neighborhood’s Last Chance to Stay Together

Chapter 1: The Truck Sandra Said Would Be Gone

Sandra Moore took six photographs of Robert Ramirez’s food truck before she said a word to him.

She stood at the edge of his driveway with her phone held upright, moving two careful steps to the left so the lens could capture the truck’s bright orange side against the row of beige houses. The fold-out serving window was shut and locked. The wheels rested well behind the seam where Robert’s driveway met the sidewalk.

Robert set down the bucket he had been carrying from the garage.

“You need something?” he asked.

Sandra lowered the phone but did not put it away. Her pink polo was tucked neatly into pressed khaki pants, and an HOA identification badge hung from a blue cord at her waist. She did not need the badge. Everyone on Alder Glen knew she chaired the compliance committee.

“You need to move that food truck.”

“It is moved.”

“Off the property.”
