When the Bank Called His Sheep Worthless, Joseph Allen Opened the Gate

Chapter 1: The Red Notice Beside the Sheep Pen

Richard Martin held the paper high enough for both farmhands to read the red word stamped across it.

OVERDUE.

Then he pointed at Joseph with the same hand.

“You’ve had three notices.”

The sheep pressed against the holding fence behind them, their dusty backs shifting like water under wool. A livestock trailer waited at the loading chute with its rear gate lowered. One farmhand stood frozen beside the latch. The other pretended to examine a length of cracked hose.

Joseph looked at the statement rather than Richard’s finger. His own name appeared beneath the bank letterhead in black block type. The amount at the bottom was large enough to buy winter feed and small enough, once, to have seemed manageable.

“I received them,” Joseph said.

Richard’s face reddened. “Then explain why I had to drive out here and find three hundred head ready for market.”
