The Neighbor Who Called His Garage Piano Junk Never Asked Who Was Waiting to Play It

Chapter 1: The Violation Tag on the Piano

Debra Campbell tied the orange violation tag to the piano before she spoke to Michael.

The plastic loop clicked shut around the tarnished brass handle. Against the dark walnut case, the tag looked almost fluorescent.

DISCARDED HOUSEHOLD MATERIAL, it read.

Michael stood at his workbench with a tuning hammer in one hand and a strip of red felt in the other. He had opened the garage door for the morning light, not for an inspection. The sun reached only halfway across the concrete, stopping just short of the piano’s front legs.

Debra stepped back as though she had labeled something at the curb.

“You can’t attach that to my property,” Michael said.

Her hand remained on her clipboard. “It’s removable.”

“That isn’t what I said.”
