Chapter 1: The Lights She Called a Violation

“You need to take those down.”

Deborah Wright stood at the bottom of Jack Davis’s porch steps with one arm raised, her index finger aimed at the strand of colored bulbs tucked beneath the roofline.

Jack looked up from his white coffee mug.

The bulbs were already glowing, though sunset was still half an hour away: blue over the porch column, amber above the front window, red near the driveway corner, then green and white continuing toward the side gate.

“They come on automatically,” he said.

“That wasn’t my question.”

Deborah wore a navy windbreaker embroidered with the association’s small oak-tree emblem. A clipboard rested against her hip. She had come prepared to make the conversation official, even if she had begun it from the sidewalk.

Jack took a slow drink. “You said I needed to take them down.”
