They Called the Old Farmer Confused Until Water Rose Beneath the Land They Planned to Sell

Chapter 1: The Sale Stakes Appeared Before the Rain Stopped

The survey stakes had gone into Samuel Miller’s lower field before the rain quit.

Bright orange ribbons snapped above the flattened soybean stubble, running in a crooked line from the county road to the sycamore at the south boundary. Samuel stood at the kitchen window with one hand braced against the sink and counted eleven of them.

The twelfth stood beside the shallow depression where water used to gather when he was a boy.

He pulled on his brown plaid shirt, dark overalls, and work boots without turning on the kitchen light. Catherine had left a folder open on the table. A yellow tab marked the signature page.

LOWER PARCEL—PROPOSED SALE.

Samuel closed the folder.

Catherine came in carrying two mugs and stopped when she saw his coat already buttoned.

“Don’t pull those stakes.”
