They Chained Maria’s Farm Gate Over a $90 Notice—Then She Found Years of Backdated Land Fines

Chapter 1: The Chain Across Maria Rivera’s Farm Gate

The chain was new.

Maria Rivera knew that before she even stopped her pickup.

It flashed yellow against the weathered gray bars of her farm gate, looped twice through the latch and secured with a county-issued lock large enough to see from fifty yards away. On the gate hung a plastic-sleeved notice that had not been there when she checked the lower field before dark Sunday evening.

Maria braked hard enough to send a crate of empty produce boxes sliding against the back of the cab.

Beyond the gate, the gravel lane curved toward two acres of vegetables ready for the Monday pickup. The refrigerated truck from the regional market was due before nine.

A white county vehicle sat on the shoulder.

Raymond King stood beside it with a clipboard tucked under one arm.

Maria killed the engine but stayed behind the wheel for a moment.
