They Paved a Shortcut Across His Pasture, but the Old Fence Line Told a Different Story

Chapter 1: The Blacktop That Wasn’t There Monday

Daniel Miller hit the brakes so hard that the thermos on the passenger seat rolled into the floorboard.

Where cattle had been standing Monday afternoon, there was now a strip of black asphalt.

It cut through the west side of his pasture in a smooth dark curve, too fresh even to have gathered dust. A paving roller sat near the far end. Two workers in reflective vests were pulling cones from the edge while another man leaned against a pickup with a clipboard.

Daniel stayed in his truck for several seconds.

He had left before sunrise to pick up feed. When he returned, part of the fence was gone.

Not damaged. Gone.

He stepped out and walked toward the opening.

The fence had never been pretty. The cedar posts leaned in different directions, and some were darker near the ground from decades of weather. His grandfather had set the first run of them when this side of the ranch was still miles from the nearest subdivision.
