Chapter 1: The Fine Beside Her Own Gate

Someone had wired the envelope to Mary Walker’s cattle gate.

Not tucked beneath the latch. Not left in the mailbox. Wired there with two tight twists of baling wire so that the white paper snapped in the morning breeze directly above the chain.

Mary killed the engine of her pickup and sat looking at it.

Behind her, the feed truck that had caused the trouble was already disappearing over the rise. It had spent eleven minutes backed across part of the gravel lane while the driver maneuvered around a soft shoulder and lined up with Mary’s grain bin.

Eleven minutes.

Mary climbed out, cut the wire with the pliers she kept in the door pocket, and opened the envelope.
