They Threatened Her Farm Over a Ninety-Dollar Road Fee, Then She Asked Where the Reserve Money Went

Chapter 1: The Ninety-Dollar Charge at the Farm Gate

Ryan Moore stood in the middle of the gravel lane with one hand raised while Rebecca Hall’s tractor idled twenty feet away.

Behind her, the flat wagon carried forty-two square bales stacked three layers high. Rebecca could feel their weight every time the tractor vibrated. She had promised the buyer she would have them delivered before noon.

Ryan did not move.

Rebecca eased the throttle down and killed the engine.

“What is it?”

Ryan held a clipboard against his blue work shirt. “You still owe the ninety.”

Rebecca looked past him toward the cooperative equipment shed. Both bay doors were open. David Anderson stood near a grease-stained workbench with two other landowners, pretending not to listen.

“I told you last week,” Rebecca said. “I’ll pay an authorized assessment.”
