They Drained the Pond His Grandfather Built, but the Old Water Right Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Morning the Bottom of the Pond Showed

Benjamin Adams knew something was wrong before he reached the gate.

The cattle were not spread along the north pasture where they usually fed after sunrise. Nearly all of them were crowded around the stock pond, shoulder to shoulder, their heads lowered toward a shrinking patch of brown water.

Benjamin stopped the pickup and stared through the windshield.

The pond had a bottom now.

Cracked gray clay showed in broad plates along the west bank, exposed almost to the center. Water that had stood deep enough the previous week to reach the dark line on the old measuring post was now little more than a shallow pool crowded with hoofprints.

He was out of the truck before the engine stopped ticking.

“Come on,” he muttered, though he did not know whether he meant the cattle or the water.

He walked the bank, looking for a breach. The clay dam was intact. No wet cut showed through the downstream side. No broken pipe. No washout.
