They Cut Down His Family Oak for a Better View, Then He Followed the Farm Association’s Money

Chapter 1: The Oak Was Down Before Breakfast

The chainsaw started before Edward Hill finished his first cup of coffee.

At first he assumed the sound came from the upper pasture, where a neighbor had been clearing storm-damaged cedar. Then he heard the hydraulic whine of a bucket truck and the hard metallic clatter of equipment directly beyond his kitchen window.

Edward set down the mug.

Nobody was supposed to be cutting anything on his place.

By the time he reached the farm entrance, a section of oak canopy was already lying across the grass beside the shared gravel lane. Fresh leaves trembled against the ground as if the tree had not yet understood what had happened.

“Shut it down,” Edward called.

The tree-service foreman looked toward the bucket operator and raised one hand.

The saw stopped.
