The Manager Gave Him Thirty Days to Leave—Then Learned Who Controlled the Building’s Parking

Chapter 1: The Notice Under Unit 4B Changed More Than One Lease

The envelope came through the gap beneath Jason Miller’s door hard enough to slide across the hardwood and strike the leg of his dining table.

He looked at it for several seconds before bending to pick it up.

There had been no knock.

No phone call the night before. No email asking him to stop by the leasing office. No maintenance dispute, late-payment warning, or complaint from a neighbor that might have prepared him for what was printed across the top of the page inside.

NOTICE OF LEASE TERMINATION.

Jason read the first paragraph standing beside his table.

Then he sat down and read it again.

Thirty days.
