She Mocked His Clearance Patio Chairs—Then the HOA Learned What He Had Been Quietly Fixing

Chapter 1: The Chairs Karen Said Lowered Everyone’s Value

Karen Adams took the photograph before Anna had even peeled the orange clearance sticker from the chair.

Patrick Hall was still tightening the last bolt when he heard the camera shutter from the sidewalk.

He looked up from one knee, a socket wrench in one hand and his worn leather work gloves lying on the concrete beside him. Karen stood at the edge of their front walk with her phone held chest-high. She wore pressed white pants, sunglasses, and the expression she usually reserved for delivery trucks parked more than ten minutes.

Anna stopped pulling at the sticker.

“Did you just take a picture of our chairs?”

Karen lowered the phone. “Only for reference.”

“Reference for what?”

Patrick watched her glance over the two powder-coated metal chairs and the small matching table Anna had found at the garden center for seventy percent off. They were plain charcoal gray, sturdy, and small enough to fit beneath the porch window without blocking the walkway.
