They Fined Raymond Over the Wrong Shade of Black—Then He Followed the HOA’s Missing Money

Chapter 1: The Seventy-Five-Dollar Shade of Black

The violation notice was taped across Raymond Clark’s mailbox door so neatly that he had to tear it in half to retrieve his own mail.

He stood at the curb with the two pieces in his hands, reading the same sentence twice.

Unauthorized exterior modification. Noncompliant color/finish. Fine: $75.

Raymond looked at the mailbox.

It was black.

Not blue-black, not charcoal, not glossy piano black. Just satin black from a hardware-store spray can, applied two evenings earlier after a delivery truck had clipped the door hard enough to bend one hinge and scrape the finish down to bare metal.

He turned the notice over as if the back might contain the joke.

It did not.
