The HOA Tried to Shut Down His Backyard Welding Shop—Then Their Complaint Made It Official

Chapter 1: The Morning They Called His Workshop Illegal

The welding machine was still humming when Samuel Lewis saw Robert Nelson pointing down his driveway.

Not gesturing. Pointing.

Beyond Robert stood a woman Samuel recognized from HOA emails and a man in a county polo shirt carrying a clipboard. Two of Samuel’s students had stopped halfway between their cars and the detached shop, welding helmets tucked under their arms.

The side door of the shop stood open behind Samuel. Fluorescent light spilled across the concrete. Three older helmets hung from hooks just inside.

Robert looked directly at the county inspector.

“That’s what I’ve been talking about. People coming in and out with torches. He’s running a business back there.”

Samuel reached behind him and switched off the welder.

The sudden quiet made Robert’s voice seem louder.
