He Crossed Jacob’s Painted Boundary Line and Called the Police on the Wrong Neighbor

Chapter 1: The Light That Turned His Windows White

The living room turned white so suddenly that Jacob Carter thought something outside had exploded.

Every shadow vanished. The framed photographs on the far wall became pale rectangles. The television screen reflected a hard square of light bright enough to make him raise one hand across his eyes.

Then came the electrical click from across the street.

Jacob stood still and listened.

Behind the closed door of his workroom, cooling fans produced their usual low, steady hum. The sound was softer than the refrigerator compressor in the kitchen and far below the limit shown on every measurement he had taken during the past two months.

Outside, Robert Garcia shouted, “Now you understand what it’s like.”

Jacob crossed to the front window without stepping directly into the beam. A construction floodlight stood beside the curb, mounted on a yellow metal frame and aimed precisely at his living room. Robert held its power cord in one hand as if he had just unveiled something.

Several houses down, a porch light came on.
