The HOA Neighbor Cut My Gate for “Shared Access”—Then the Old Maintenance Deal Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Morning Someone Cut Jonathan’s Gate

The jaws of the bolt cutters closed around Jonathan Baker’s chain just as he turned into his driveway.

For half a second, he thought the man at the side gate was a utility worker. Then the chain snapped.

Donald Nelson straightened, the long red handles hanging from one hand. The severed end of the chain dropped against the galvanized gate with a hard metallic slap.

Behind him, an HOA maintenance truck idled on the gravel lane.

Jonathan stopped his pickup in the middle of the driveway.

He had been home less than an hour after twelve days away on an industrial maintenance job. His duffel bag was still on the passenger floorboard. He had expected coffee, a shower, and a morning spent checking everything that tended to go wrong while he was gone.

Instead, Donald had just cut his lock.

Jonathan climbed out.
