Thomas Mitchell’s phone vibrated against the tractor console, and the first thing he saw on the screen was his workshop door moving.

He stopped the tractor so abruptly that the rake behind him shuddered in the cut hay.

The alert was only three words.

WORKSHOP DOOR OPEN.

Thomas stared across half a mile of field toward the gravel lane. From where he sat, the workshop was no more than a gray roof beyond a line of fence posts. Nobody had permission to be there.

He wiped his thumb across the phone and opened the camera feed.

For two seconds the image showed nothing but the weathered door, the heavy brass-colored padlock, and the narrow strip of morning sun along the threshold.

Then Deborah Nelson stepped into frame.
