The Farm Consultant Ordered the Sprayer Forward—Then Linda Refused to Open the Field Gate

Chapter 1: The Gate Linda Would Not Open

“Drive it through.”

The spray-rig operator looked at James Williams, then at Linda Green, who was standing directly in front of the locked steel gate with the key in her fist.

The diesel engine idled behind them, low and heavy. A folded boom stretched above the machine like a pair of metal arms. The tank had already been mixed for the east orchard, and every minute mattered if the crew wanted the treatment on before the afternoon wind picked up.

James pointed toward the gate.

“Linda. Open it.”

She did not move.

Two field hands had stopped stacking empty chemical jugs near the wash pad. The orchard mechanic leaned against the service truck. Nobody said anything.

Linda held the laminated field map against her thigh and looked once more at the application sheet clipped to James’s board.
