The HOA Dug Into My Family Cemetery for a Golf Expansion—Then Their Own Homeowners Learned What They Had Ignored

Chapter 1: The Excavator Was Still Warm Beside Margaret’s Grave

The excavator was still warm when Edward Martinez put his palm against the yellow engine housing.

He jerked his hand back as if the machine had answered him.

The bucket rested in loose brown soil beneath the three white oaks at the back of his property. Fresh tracks crossed the grass from the direction of Ridgemont’s golf course. One track had crushed the wire boundary marker Edward had been meaning to replace for three summers.

The machine itself did not frighten him. He spent his working life around equipment larger than this—skidders, loaders, tracked feller bunchers that could make the ground tremble.

What stopped him was the empty space six yards beyond it.

Margaret Martinez’s headstone was gone.

Edward walked toward the opening without realizing he had dropped the leather gloves he had been carrying. The grave site had been scraped down into raw earth. An orange survey flag leaned at the edge of the cut, almost cheerful against the dirt.

He found the stone against the trunk of the largest oak.
