They Tore Down His Grandfather’s Farm Fence, Then Charged Him for Clearing Their Own Road

Chapter 1: The Fence Was Gone When Ronald Came Home

Ronald Carter hit the brakes so hard that the steel thermos on the passenger seat rolled into the footwell.

For three seconds he sat behind the wheel of his pickup, staring through the windshield at a piece of his farm that no longer looked like his farm.

The southern fence was gone.

Not leaning. Not damaged by a fallen tree. Not cut in one place to let equipment through.

Gone.

From the hayfield entrance all the way toward the low pasture, the line his grandfather had built decades earlier had been reduced to a row of dark holes punched through the damp earth. Roughly a hundred and eighty feet of weathered posts, woven wire, and cedar rails had vanished while Ronald was away.

He shut off the truck.

Four days earlier he had left before sunrise to work with a survey crew two counties over. Margaret had stayed at the house, but she no longer walked the lower fields alone. Her knees made the slope difficult, and from the kitchen windows the southern boundary disappeared behind the machine shed.
