He Let the Neighborhood Children Cross His Yard Until Their Father Claimed It as His Own

Chapter 1: The Swing Set That Appeared Before Breakfast

The man kneeling in Andrew Moore’s grass had a socket wrench in one hand and a steel anchor between his boots.

Andrew stopped in the doorway with his coffee halfway to his mouth.

Beyond the porch steps, a blue-and-red swing set stood where there had been open lawn the night before. One end sat near David Clark’s yard. The other stretched across the pale dirt track that neighborhood children had worn through Andrew’s grass and into a patch Andrew had reseeded twice that spring.

A second installer braced a plastic support while the first tightened a bolt.

“Morning,” Andrew said.

Both men looked up.

The kneeling installer gave him the cautious smile of someone unsure whether he was speaking to the customer or a neighbor. “Morning.”

Andrew stepped off the porch. Coffee moved against the rim of his mug, but none spilled. He walked past the slide, past two unopened bags of rubber mulch, and stopped beside the nearest support.
