The Day He Closed the Neighborhood Pool and Finally Told His Children the Truth

Chapter 1: The Notice Folded Once at the Door

“Your children are no longer welcome at the pool.”

Donna Roberts stood on Patrick Young’s porch with a white sheet of paper held between two fingers. Behind her, beyond the crepe myrtles and the line of cedar fencing, children shouted and water slapped against concrete. The neighborhood pool was less than a hundred yards away, close enough that Patrick could hear the whistle Donna wore during her morning exercise classes.

Tyler and Michelle stood inside the open doorway behind him. Both were still wet. Tyler’s hair clung to his forehead, and Michelle had wrapped a striped towel around her shoulders. A damp footprint darkened the hardwood beneath each of them.

Patrick looked at Donna, then at the paper.

“What happened?”

“You know what happened.” Donna’s voice carried farther than it needed to. Two neighbors walking past slowed without quite stopping. “They disrupted the aqua-aerobics session again. Splashing, shouting, ignoring instructions.”

“We were playing,” Tyler said.

Patrick lifted one hand without turning. Tyler went quiet, but not willingly.
