The HOA President Called His Garden an Eyesore—Then Her Own Rules Began to Collapse

Chapter 1: The Morning They Measured the Garden for Removal

The measuring tape snapped across Jason Lewis’s tomato bed before he understood why two strangers were standing inside his gate.

Its metal edge struck a cedar board, bounced over a branch heavy with green fruit, and stopped against his boot.

“Seven feet, four inches,” the landscaping contractor called.

Virginia Adams held her phone above the plants, angling the camera toward the four raised beds as if documenting storm damage. She wore a white polo embroidered with the association’s name and the expression she used at board meetings when someone had spoken past their allotted three minutes.

Jason set down the pruning shears.

“What are you measuring?”

Virginia lowered the phone only far enough to look at him over it. “Access.”

“For what?”
