The HOA President Said They Had Forty Hours of Her on Camera—Then Amanda Audited the People Watching Her

Chapter 1: Smile for the Camera, Sweetheart

“Smile for the camera, sweetheart.”

Pamela Scott raised a black telephoto camera between them before Amanda Green had fully opened the front door.

The lens pointed past Amanda’s shoulder into the dim hallway.

Amanda kept one hand on the door. “Excuse me?”

Pamela lowered the camera just enough to show the pleased curve of her mouth. She wore a cream jacket despite the heat already gathering over the pavement, and a laminated HOA badge hung from a blue cord at her neck.

“We have forty hours of you on tape,” she said. “So I wouldn’t waste time pretending.”

The camera rose again. Amanda turned her face away before the shutter clicked.

Behind Pamela, the neighborhood looked painfully ordinary. Sprinklers ticked across trimmed lawns. A delivery van rolled past the mail kiosk. Somewhere, a garage door groaned open.
