The HOA Threatened an Elderly Couple Over Their Lawn—Then Their Mower Refused to Walk Away

Chapter 1: The Line Jack Cut Through Their Yard

“You can’t do that here.”

Jack Robinson heard the woman before he shut off the mower.

The machine rolled another foot through the Harris yard, chewing a clean green path into grass that had climbed nearly to his thighs in places. Then he released the handle. The engine coughed down, leaving the sudden quiet filled by cicadas and the faint metallic tap of something against concrete.

Charles Harris’s cane.

The old man stood near the front walk with one hand wrapped around its curved handle. His fingers were trembling hard enough that the cane tip clicked against the pavement every few seconds.

Jack looked from him to the woman coming across the driveway.

She carried a clipboard tucked against one hip and wore the expression of someone who had already decided what the conversation was going to be.

“I said you can’t do that here,” she repeated.
