The Locked Red Door Made the Neighborhood Suspicious Until Mark Finally Opened It

Chapter 1: The Red Door Behind Mark Hill’s Wall

Barbara Walker’s hand was already wrapped around the upper bolt when Mark stepped through the kitchen door.

The metal gave a dry scrape beneath her fingers.

“Don’t touch that.”

Barbara turned without letting go. She stood on the narrow strip of grass beside the stone wall separating their yards, one polished shoe planted between Mark’s rosemary bed and the drainage channel. Her phone rested in her other hand.

“I was only checking whether it opens onto my property.”

“It doesn’t.”

Mark crossed the lawn. The red door sat inside the old stonework like something salvaged from another century—sun-faded boards, black strap hinges, and three locks arranged from shoulder height to knee height. The door had been there before Barbara joined the architectural committee, before Mark retired, before half the houses on the block replaced their original fences with white vinyl panels.

Only the locks were new.
