They Painted Over His Parking Space, but the Missing Number Led Him to the HOA’s Missing Money

Chapter 1: The Morning Parking Space Fourteen Disappeared

David Carter knew something was wrong before he reached his car.

The white number that had been beneath the driver’s door every morning for three years was gone.

He stopped halfway across the condominium parking lot, coffee in one hand, laptop bag over his shoulder, and stared at a rectangle of gray paint several shades darker than the surrounding asphalt.

Space 14 had disappeared.

Not faded. Not chipped away.

Painted over.

David set his coffee on the curb and crouched. The gray surface was tacky enough that his fingertip came away stained.

Fresh.
