The Day Brian Drew a Grey Line Through the HOA’s Power

Chapter 1: The Lock Closed Before Brian Spoke

The steel padlock snapped shut while Brian Miller was still kneeling beneath his grandfather’s oldest rose bush.

The sound carried across the quiet street—bright, metallic, final.

Brian froze with one hand around a dead cane and the pruning shears half open in the other. A red petal rested against his knuckle. Beyond the row of mature bushes, Nancy Torres stood at his driveway gate with one hand on the new lock and the other planted on her hip.

“There,” she said to the man beside her. “Document the time.”

The man glanced at a tablet. He wore paint-spattered work trousers and a faded shirt with the sleeves rolled above his elbows. At his feet sat a sealed bucket of grey paint, a hard plastic equipment case, and an aluminum tripod.

Brian rose slowly.

Nancy watched him as though she had been waiting for that exact movement.

She had dressed for authority: navy blazer, pressed slacks, laminated HOA badge clipped high on her chest. The badge was new. So was the title printed beneath her photograph.
