The Chair on Robert’s Roof Looked Ridiculous Until the HOA Learned What It Was Protecting

Chapter 1: The Chair Everyone Could See From the Street

Carol Johnson was standing in Robert Moore’s driveway when he came around the side of the house, holding her phone in both hands and aiming it at his roof.

She did not lower it when she saw him.

“Morning,” Robert said.

The camera shutter clicked.

He stopped beside his work van, one hand still on the side door. Above them, against the pale blue Monday sky, an old wooden chair sat near the rear slope of his roof as if someone had carried it up there for a better view and forgotten to come back down.

From the street, it looked ridiculous.

Robert knew that.

The chair had once been dark brown. Years of sun had bleached the back slats gray, and one front leg sat slightly higher than the other because of the metal bracket beneath it. Two black straps crossed low over the seat frame and disappeared toward mounting points near a discontinued vent.
