My Neighbor Paved My Private Driveway, but the Old Boundary Line Hid a Harder Truth

Chapter 1: The Morning Black Asphalt Crossed the Old Concrete Line

The first thing that woke me was the reversing alarm.

Three hard electronic beeps, a pause, then three more, close enough to my bedroom wall that I opened my eyes already angry.

For half a second I thought a delivery truck had backed into the side yard. Then the house trembled faintly beneath me.

I crossed the hall barefoot and pulled the blind aside.

A dump truck sat beside my driveway.

Behind it, men in reflective vests were spreading black asphalt toward Frank Miller’s backyard gate.

I did not put on socks.

By the time I reached the side door, the air smelled of hot tar and diesel. A compact roller crawled along the edge of my old pale concrete, pressing a fresh black strip into place. Orange cones stood where my trash bins usually sat. One worker held a rake. Another guided the truck backward with one gloved hand.
