The Morning Patricia Locked the Gate and Donald Chose Who He Would Let Through

Chapter 1: The Red Light Before Sunrise

The school bus reached the gate at 5:59 a.m.

At six, the steel arm dropped in front of it.

The driver stopped hard enough to throw a row of children against their seat belts. Behind the bus, a sedan braked, then a pickup, then two SUVs, their headlights stacking along the curved entrance road. The driver leaned from his window and entered the access code twice.

The keypad flashed red.

Donald Mitchell watched from the shoulder beside his work truck, one hand around a metal thermos. He had parked there to check a patch of asphalt he had laid the previous afternoon. The repair was already dry, its edges dark against the older road.

The driver tried the code again.

Red.

A woman in the first SUV honked. Another car joined her. Within a minute, the quiet entrance sounded like a loading dock.
