She Sent An Excavator To Tear Down The Ramp That Kept His Daughter Home

Chapter 1: The Machine Was Already At The House

The excavator bucket struck the side of Patrick Hall’s white house before he reached the driveway.

The sound was not like wood breaking. It was deeper than that, a heavy metallic crunch followed by the splintering crack of treated lumber and the dull pop of bolts tearing out of concrete. Dust jumped from the siding. A strip of white trim twisted loose and fell across the shrubs Amanda had planted in spring because she wanted “something alive by the ramp.”

Patrick stopped his truck half in the street.

For one second, he did not move.

The yellow excavator was parked on the edge of his front lawn with its engine growling, its bucket raised against the landing that connected the exterior lift to the second-floor entrance. Two workers in neon vests stood near orange cones. One held a pry bar. Another had already stacked pieces of railing near the curb as if they were garbage from a remodel.

The landing was not a remodel.

It was the way Amanda came home.

Patrick got out and left the truck door open.
