The HOA Came With Bolt Cutters To Open The Road He Closed For His Mother’s Safety

Chapter 1: The Bolt Cutters Arrived Before The Notice Did

The red jaws of the bolt cutters closed around Brandon Martin’s lock before anyone on the other side of the gate said his name.

He watched from six feet away, one hand around a paper coffee cup gone lukewarm, the other resting against the folded deed packet in his jacket pocket. The black metal gate stood between him and the white HOA patrol vehicle idling on the gravel road, its tires still throwing dust into the cold morning air. Behind it, the lake flashed blue between the pines like nothing ugly had the right to happen there.

“Do not cut that lock,” Brandon said.

The woman holding the bolt cutters paused, but she did not lower them.

Nicole Harris looked exactly as she had at the last three board notices: blonde hair tucked smooth behind one ear, dark blazer zipped against the mountain air, sunglasses hiding whatever expression she had decided to bring that morning. She stood beneath the wooden sign Brandon had screwed to the gate himself.

PRIVATE PROPERTY – NO HOA ACCESS.

Beside her, Joshua Perez, the HOA patrol supervisor, shifted his weight. Two workers in reflective vests waited near a flatbed truck behind the patrol vehicle. One of them had a pry bar. The other kept looking at the washed-out stretch beyond the gate, where orange repair markers leaned along the soft shoulder like warning flags.

Nicole lifted her chin. “Unlock this gate, Mr. Martin.”
