The Gold Key at His Door Could Not Unlock the Truth About the Lift

Chapter 1: The Machine Was Already Cutting Through the Porch

The saw was already cutting through the lift rail when Alexander Carter opened the front door.

The sound came through the house as a hard metallic scream, loud enough to startle both German shepherds from the rug and send Ruth’s water glass trembling against the table beside her chair.

Alexander stepped onto the threshold with his white mug still in his hand.

A compact loader idled in the driveway beneath the pale morning sky. Its bucket rested inches above the concrete path. One worker held a reciprocating saw against the lower rail of the platform lift. Another had already removed two sections of the black safety barrier and was carrying them toward a flatbed truck.

Orange cones stood across Alexander’s walkway as though the property had stopped belonging to him sometime before breakfast.

“Stop the saw,” he said.

The worker glanced toward a man in a gray work jacket near the loader.

The man raised one hand. The saw wound down, leaving a high ringing silence behind it.
