They Took His Late Wife’s Christmas Wreath at Dawn—Then He Asked Who Had Actually Approved the Rule

Chapter 1: The Wreath Was Already in Their Cart

Stephen Campbell knew the wreath before he saw the woman holding it.

The red berries had faded to a dull burgundy years ago, and one of the pinecones leaned crookedly because Katherine had wired it back on after it fell during an ice storm. At six in the morning, under the weak yellow porch light, those details were unmistakable.

The wreath was lying faceup in a gray utility cart at the bottom of his steps.

Beside it sat the small wooden nativity his father had carved in 1971.

Stephen opened the storm door.

“Stop.”

The woman beside the cart turned. She wore a dark coat over business clothes and held a clipboard against her chest. Stephen had seen her twice from a distance at association meetings he had not attended.

Jennifer Clark.
