He Blocked the Farm Mail Route for Months, So the Farmer Used the Same Rule Against Him

Chapter 1: The Orange Slips Beside the Cattle Gate

Donna Lee’s mail truck was stopped crooked in the county road when Matthew Baker came through the cattle gate.

Her left wheels were nearly on the center line. Behind her, a dark pickup sat nose-in across the gravel turnout, close enough to Matthew’s mailbox that Donna could not pull alongside it without putting half her vehicle into traffic.

Matthew knew the pickup.

He did not know who owned it.

That had become a familiar distinction.

Across the fence, cars already lined Gary Thompson’s drive. A folding sign stood near the entrance to the renovated barn, its lettering turned away from Matthew. Somewhere beyond the trees, music thumped softly.

Donna lowered her window.

“Matthew.”
