Chapter 1: The Path That Was Never Ours

The shoeprint was still wet when I found it.

It sat deep in the dark soil under Catherine’s roses, heel pressed almost against the base of the plant. Above it, one red bloom hung sideways from a snapped stem.

I crouched beside it with the garden hose still running behind me.

“Catherine.”

She came around the side of the house carrying her coffee. She didn’t ask what was wrong. She followed my eyes to the broken stem.

“That’s the third one,” she said.

“The third rose?”

“The third this week.”
