My Neighbor Used Three Feet of My Yard for Years—Then the HOA Learned Why the Fence Was Wrong

Chapter 1: The Mowers Were Already in My Yard

When William Miller opened his side gate at 6:47 Monday morning, two commercial zero-turn mowers were sitting where his wheelbarrow should have been able to pass.

One was angled toward the wooden fence. The other sat almost parallel to it, dew shining on its black seat. Beyond them, a landscaping employee was lowering another machine down the ramp of a white trailer.

William stood with one hand on the gate.

“Morning,” the employee said.

William looked at the mower, then at the narrow strip of grass between the fence and Joshua Brown’s driveway.

“Morning. Why is that here?”

The employee glanced over his shoulder. “We’re loading out.”

“I can see that.”
