The HOA Tore Down His Shed, Then Learned Which Rules It Had Ignored

Chapter 1: The Shed Was Gone Before Larry Understood Why

Larry Miller stopped halfway through the gate because there was nothing left to unlock.

For three years, the narrow path beside his house had ended at a twelve-by-sixteen-foot wooden shed with double doors, a small side window, and a roof he had repainted himself the previous spring. Now the doors lay face-down in the grass.

Boards were scattered across the concrete pad. Splintered siding leaned against the fence. One section of roof rested upside down over a broken shelving unit.

For several seconds Larry stood with his overnight bag still hanging from one shoulder.

Then he set the bag down.

He did not touch anything.

His first instinct was anger, but habit arrived before anger could organize itself. Years of supervising warehouse operations had taught him that damaged equipment, disputed shipments, and workplace accidents became harder to explain the moment somebody started moving things.

Larry took out his phone.
