They Tried to Drive His Dog Off the Farm, Then Learned Who Controlled the Only Water Line

Chapter 1: The Morning Patricia Ordered Ranger Off the Lane

Patricia Hall pointed at Ranger before William Carter had both boots out of his truck.

“That dog does not come past this line.”

Her finger was aimed at the packed gravel between the cooperative equipment shed and the drainage ditch, as if there were an invisible boundary only she could see. Ranger stood beside William’s door, his worn leather harness snug across his chest, his head level and still.

Seven people had gathered for the Monday maintenance meeting. Nobody spoke.

William closed the truck door carefully.

“He’s working.”

“I know what you call him.” Patricia held a clipboard against her white work shirt. “The board adopted the animal restriction Friday. No unapproved animals in cooperative work areas.”

Ranger looked toward William when his breathing changed. William touched two fingers against the dog’s shoulder.
