They Fined His Farm for Every Small Violation Until He Opened the Cooperative’s Missing-Money Ledger

Chapter 1: Four Notices at the Cattle Gate

Debra Wilson was standing at Jonathan Miller’s cattle gate before the feed truck arrived.

She had parked her white pickup on the shoulder of the shared gravel lane, leaving just enough room for a car but not enough for the eighteen-wheeler Jonathan expected in less than ten minutes. One hand held a clipboard against her beige jacket. The other rested on the top rail of the gate as though she owned that too.

Jonathan slowed his tractor.

“Morning,” he said.

Debra did not return it.

“I need you to sign for this.”

She lifted a sheet from the clipboard.

Jonathan killed the tractor engine. The sudden quiet left only cattle shifting behind the fence and the distant grind of a truck changing gears on the county road.
