He Said the Livestock Trailer Had Always Stayed There—Until Fourteen Inches Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Trailer That Was Not Moving

The cedar post had not merely fallen. It had been split through the middle and driven into the gravel beneath the steel tongue of Gary Mitchell’s livestock trailer.

Jonathan Campbell stood over it with one glove still tucked into his back pocket.

For several seconds, he did nothing.

The trailer filled the narrow farm lane like a wall. Gray aluminum sides rose above him, streaked with dried mud and manure. One rear tire sat in a rut deep enough to hold yesterday’s rainwater. Beyond it, the lane bent toward Jonathan’s hay barn, where a morning feed delivery was supposed to arrive before nine.

Jonathan looked at the broken post again.

Then he heard boots grinding gravel behind him.

“Don’t start with that.”

Gary Mitchell came through the open gate from his pasture. He wore faded work jeans and an old sleeveless shirt despite the cool morning. His arms were folded before he reached Jonathan.
