The ambulance siren stopped.

Barbara Hill heard that before she understood what it meant.

She was kneeling beside Samuel Wright in the gravel, one hand pressed against his shoulder, the other holding her phone on speaker while the dispatcher counted breaths with her.

The county road was nearly half a mile away.

The ambulance should have been getting louder.

Instead, the siren had gone silent at the gate.

Samuel’s face had turned the color of old fence paint.
