They Ordered Joshua to Move His Family’s Irrigation Ditch—Then Their Own Water Started Disappearing

Chapter 1: The Friday Deadline Beside the Old Headgate

Michael Wilson had his hand on the iron headgate when he told Joshua Allen he had until Friday.

“After that, the daily penalties start.”

Joshua stopped three paces away.

The gate sat where it had sat longer than either man had been alive, bolted between weathered concrete cheeks at the edge of the Allen ditch. Rust darkened its wheel. Mineral scale traced pale lines beneath the lifting plate. Near the bottom, almost hidden by mud and decades of paint, raised iron numbers read 1897.

Michael’s fingers rested on the wheel as though it belonged to him.

Joshua looked at the hand first.

Then he looked at Michael.

“Take your hand off that.”
