They Put a $42,000 Lien on Her Farm, Then She Opened the Ledger They Thought Nobody Saved

Chapter 1: The Pink Notice Across the Folding Table

Donna Moore slid the pink paper across the folding table before Amy Hall had finished pulling out her chair.

The number sat in the center of the page in heavy black type.

$42,000.

Amy did not sit.

Behind Donna, the equipment shed doors stood open to the cooperative road, where pale gravel ran between pasture fences toward the county highway. A feed truck rattled somewhere beyond the bend. Inside, eight farmers occupied mismatched folding chairs between a parked seed drill and a stack of bagged mineral supplement.

Donna touched one fingernail to the amount.

“You need to take care of that by Friday.”

Amy looked from the paper to Donna.
