The Day They Chained His Farm Road, He Went Looking for the Record Everyone Ignored

Chapter 1: The Morning a Chain Appeared Across His Farm Road

Gregory Hill saw the chain before he saw the woman.

It stretched from the cedar post beside his mailbox to the steel cattle gate on the other side of the gravel lane, waist-high and new enough that the links still carried an oily gray shine. A brass-colored padlock hung near the middle.

His feed wagon was already hitched to the tractor behind him.

For several seconds, Gregory simply sat in the seat with the engine idling.

Nobody had chained that road in the forty-two years he had been driving it.

He killed the engine, climbed down, and walked toward the barrier.

A white sheet of paper had been slipped through one of the links.

TRESPASS ASSESSMENT was printed across the top.
