The HOA Fined Him for His Restored Pickup—Then He Followed the Records Behind One Deep Scratch

Chapter 1: The Scratch Across Three Years of Work

Matthew Hall’s fingertip stopped halfway down the driver-side door.

At first he thought the pale line was wax residue. The truck had spent Sunday afternoon under the garage lights while he worked a final coat into the red paint, and he had come outside Monday morning expecting to find nothing more serious than pollen.

He bent closer.

The line caught his thumbnail.

Bare metal showed beneath the paint.

Matthew straightened slowly, then crouched again as if changing his angle might change what he was seeing. The gouge began a few inches behind the front edge of the door and ran almost perfectly level for about six inches. It was too high for a shopping cart, too straight for a branch, too narrow for anything that might have blown across the driveway.

Someone had dragged something sharp through the paint.

Three years of Saturdays sat behind that one line.
