They Fined Every Farm Sign on the Road—Then Jack Found the Strip They Never Controlled

Chapter 1: The Sign Karen Pulled Down Before Noon

Karen Davis had Sarah Green’s sign halfway out of the ground when Jack Mitchell’s hay truck came around the bend.

Jack saw the white board first, rocking between Karen’s hands as she worked the wooden stake loose from the shoulder. Then he saw Sarah standing beside the mailbox in house shoes and a blue cardigan, one hand pressed against her opposite wrist.

Two children waited farther up her driveway with their backpacks on.

Jack eased off the accelerator.

The truck’s load shifted behind him with a dry rustle.

The sign had been hand-painted in red letters large enough to read from the road.

SLOW DOWN — CHILDREN CROSSING.

Karen pulled once more. The stake came free.
